Nick Chubb: Superhero On and Off of the Field

LL_444-Nick Chubb

Known as “The Batman” on the football field, Nick Chubb is a lot like the caped crusader he’s nicknamed after. He’s stealth, powerful, determined and, of course, resilient. Not many linebackers or other defensive barriers can curtail his path toward the end zone. In just four pro seasons, Chubb has earned over 4,816 rushing yards and 36 touchdowns.

But there are many other superhero qualities that describe the Cleveland Browns’ top-rated running back. He’s hardworking. He’s grounded. He’s humble.

Nick Chubb, Cleveland Browns Running Back

The running back who gives back

Despite playing in a league that’s become known for its showmanship, often more so than its sportsmanship, it’s refreshing to root for players like Chubb. Early on in his professional career with the Browns, teammates called him “Old School” because of his quiet, unassuming demeanor. He’s the type that cares more about the team win than boosting his own stats. If you want proof, just watch a video of an exchange between him and former teammate.

He’s also the type that gives just as much time and heart to off-the-field projects and causes. In August 2021, Chubb partnered with Heinen’s, a Cleveland-based grocery store brand, to launch Chubb Crunch. A portion of the cereal’s sales benefit First Candle, a nonprofit aimed to prevent sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). Within six days, Chubb Crunch sold roughly 24,000 boxes.

Clearly, football fans love cereal. Or, they just love supporting a man like Nick Chubb.

Back when Chubb was first drafted to the NFL following an incredible college career at University of Georgia, he donated 65 helmets to his high school alma mater, Cedartown High School, in Georgia. The gift was worth an estimated $15,000 – a steep price for a rookie who had yet to put on his own pro football helmet.

Throughout his time with the NFL, Chubb has actively worked with charities through the Cleveland Browns Give Back, the team’s philanthropy outlet. He also hosts a free youth camp in his hometown every year. In 2020, Chubb received the Ed Block Courage Award, given annually to a member of each NFL team who exemplifies courage, compassion, commitment and community.

Inspired by his roots

There’s a remarkable story behind Chubb’s resilient personality and giving spirit. He credits his family’s ancestors who, at the height of slavery in the 1860s, fled North Carolina to an area in northwest Georgia. Once there, John Henry Chubb, his family (including eight sons and a daughter) and others formed a small colony dubbed “Chubbtown.”

According to historical records and family accounts, no one who lived in Chubbtown became slaves again. Furthermore, the 2600+ acre community, which sat in the middle of nowhere, thrived under Chubb family leadership despite battling hard times in the post-Civil War era. They founded businesses, a church, a school, etc. and even traded with white people from neighboring cities.

While the town has since dwindled some 160+ years later, Chubb’s strong-willed ancestors remain in the back of his mind. Injuries, losses and distractions have been thrown his way. And yet, his resolve to succeed on and, most importantly, off the field remains stronger than ever.

As Batman says, “It’s not who I am underneath, but what I do that defines me.”

Without a doubt, the same can be said for our superhero Legend, Nick Chubb.
